How Long Does a Spray Tan Last? (+ Tips to Make It Last Longer)

A great spray tan typically lasts 5 to 10 days — but where you land in that range is largely up to how you prep and care for it. Here's what to expect and how to stretch your glow.

It's the first question almost everyone asks me before they book: how long is this actually going to last? The honest answer is that a spray tan usually looks its best for 5 to 10 days — but the exact number depends far less on the solution and far more on your skin and your aftercare. As a spray tan artist in Castle Rock, Colorado, our dry climate is one of the biggest factors I coach clients through, because hydrated skin holds color and dry skin lets it go.

How a spray tan actually develops

Your tan comes from DHA, a color additive that reacts with the amino acids in the very top layer of your skin. That reaction keeps developing for 6 to 24 hours after your appointment, which is why your color looks richer the next day. Because the tan lives in those outermost skin cells, your tan fades as those cells naturally shed — so anything that speeds up shedding shortens your tan.

What determines how long yours lasts

  • Prep: Exfoliating and shaving before your appointment removes dead skin so color grips an even, fresh surface.
  • Hydration: Well-moisturized skin sheds slowly and evenly — this is the single biggest lever you control.
  • Skin type: Naturally dry or very oily skin tends to release color a little faster.
  • Your routine: Long hot showers, pools, hot tubs, and heavy sweating all accelerate fading.
  • Products: Exfoliants, retinols, and acne treatments lift color quickly wherever you use them.

Rule of thumb: the better hydrated your skin, the longer and more evenly your tan fades. Dry skin is the number-one reason a tan looks patchy by day four.

How to make your spray tan last longer

If you want to live at the 10-day end of that range instead of the 5-day end, it comes down to a few consistent habits from the moment you leave your appointment.

  • Wait the full recommended time before your first rinse, then rinse in warm water with no soap or scrubbing.
  • Moisturize morning and night with a fragrance-free, oil-free lotion.
  • Take shorter, cooler showers and pat dry with a towel instead of rubbing.
  • Avoid baths, pools, and hot tubs when you can — chlorine and long soaks break color down fast.
  • Skip exfoliating scrubs, loofahs, and active skincare ingredients until you're ready to fade.

When to book for a special occasion

Because your tan keeps developing overnight and looks its most natural on days 2 through 5, I usually recommend getting sprayed 1 to 2 days before an event rather than the morning of. That gives your color time to settle and any first-rinse guide bronzer to wash away, so you're glowing at your peak when it counts.
